Oct. 25, 2017
My title is Jack Lee, an alumnus of CCNY, class of ‘74. I used to be additionally a member of the Males’s Varsity Fencing group from 1970-1973. I’m presently retired and have embarked on a mission to assist the Girls’s fencing workforce at CCNY.
This past summer season, a bunch of our teammates got together for a reunion BBQ and we reconnected after some forty years. It was a wonderful experience. We had our wives with us and we had been catching up with flag shirt with initials stories and reminiscences. We additionally spoke about our lives since school with careers and household. We remembered our coaches who have past away. Their impression on our lives can’t be beneath estimated. We all had a long profession in our numerous disciplines, some in engineering and structure and in drugs and others. The frequent bond was we were on the same group again within the 1970s, the heydays of CCNY athletics.
I decided to jot down this text for The Campus to provide my private perspective on my forty-five years since attending CCNY. My hope is that it’s going to supply some steerage and wisdom to some new college students attending CCNY.
In the fall of 1969, I began my freshman 12 months at CCNY in the varsity of Engineering. As someone new to varsity, I did not know what to expect. I used to be told throughout registration week that we would have liked to take two PE courses to fulfill our curricula necessities. I scanned the checklist of accessible courses and Introduction to fencing caught my eye. I had no idea what this sport was about nevertheless it appeared exotic and that i wanted to attempt something new.
I remember the first day of class and i went up to Lewisohn stadium and walked into the fencing room. The instructor was Frank Seeley, a center aged man with handsome features. He lined all of us up on the strip and proceeded to cross out the tools. There was a jacket and glove and a mask and a foil. We had been instructed to pair up and stand en guard. All this was very new and alien to us. Over the next few weeks, he instructed us on a few of the basic strikes of fencing, lunge, parry, and riposte… It required us to make use of muscles that we usually don’t use. I was sore after a couple of lessons nevertheless it was intriguing to learn about this new sport. It had an attraction to me for being considerably of an elite sport.
About mid-term, Mr. Seeley, approached a number of of us in school and requested if we would consider making an attempt out for the freshman fencing crew. He indicated that we confirmed promise and that our physique and response time was adequate to try out. I used to be flattered and was on the lookout for some extra curricular exercise on campus. Being a commuter, I had a while to kill between lessons. Apart from, Mr. Seeley was the freshmen coach. It was a shoo-in.
The freshman workforce consisted of about 15 people. There were three weapons of foil, epee and sabre. Every required different set of abilities. The workforce consisted of three starters of each weapon and a tournament is a spherical robin of the three gamers and a complete of 27 bouts. The team with nearly all of bouts received wins the tournament. Along with the starters, there are 2 other subs of every weapon. If a starter was injured or had a bad day, it was the coach’s decision to place a sub in to assist out.
I was assigned to sabre mainly as a result of there was a scarcity. Because it turned out, I used to be not very good at sabre. Within a short interval, the coach determined to switch me to epee. I was tall and have a protracted attain and likewise left handed, all that gave me an advantage over my opponents.
Being on the fencing workforce was a lift to my morale. I made some good mates and likewise obtained to go on journeys. At that time, there have been only some schools with fencing teams together with all of the Ivy League faculties and the army academies. We might have duel meets, some at house and a few away. On these bus trips, we might bond with our teammates. On the in a single day trips, we would cling out and play playing cards and have dinner in a group. Our teammates were at all times supportive and cheered us on after we were competing on the strip. This was an extra incentive for us to do effectively. Though fencing is a one on one competition, the staff succeeds or fails on the entire accomplishments of all 9 gamers. If we need to win as a team, we needed to help all our teammates.
The advantages of being on a sports crew are many. I’ll simply highlight only a few. The lesson of self-discipline is a tough one to study. Being on a aggressive sports team requires a dedication of effort and time on a weekly foundation. Time is a treasured commodity. Between courses and homework and leisure, time should be set aside for apply and for tournaments. The discipline required to train and flag shirt with initials perfect a sport is an effective follow for life in the real world.
A few of our teammates have been chosen to move as much as the Men’s Varsity group. The coach of the workforce was professor Ed Lucia. He was a short chubby man but he commanded respect with each action and each phrase. He was a fencing grasp of the old skool. He had produced many all-Americans over his long illustrious profession at CCNY. He was not solely our coach but also our mentor. In his many talks to our group of teammates, he supplied some philosophies and classes for life. He taught us the importance of apply. Solely by observe and exhausting work will we reach our bouts and in life. He additionally taught us about honor and respect and being a great sport, each in winning and losing. We all the time held our heads excessive.
My three years on the Varsity team was stuffed with pleasure. I was one in every of the top gamers and enjoyed a wholesome dose of publicity. In my senior and final yr, I used to be a finalist at the ECAC tournament. This was in the course of the open admissions years and the NCAA put CCNY on probation. Just a few of us was disappointed that we weren’t given the prospect to compete for an All-American title.
After graduation, I was instantly hired by IBM and moved upstate to Fishkill NY. Over the subsequent 30 years or so, I loved an awesome profession at IBM. I used to be promoted to Advisory Engineer after a number of strikes. I ended up on the prestigious Research facility of IBM situated in Yorktown NY referred to as the Watson Lab, named after the CEO of IBM.
My years working at Watson lab took me all over the world together with Israel, Russia, Germany and Rome and Taiwan. All over the place I went, I was ready to communicate and work together with the locals partly because of my experience on the fencing workforce. How did that occur? The skills I learned being in a competitive staff sport translate effectively into the corporate world. Coping with people of various backgrounds and cultures is very much like dealing with teammates and opponents. We competed fiercely whereas on the strip however respected each other off the strip.
I retired a number of years in the past and was able to look back and mirror on my career and life. I had married and raised three great children. They’re all adults now and have their very own careers to climb. I wrote my autobiography hoping it might inspire them to do one thing worthwhile. It’s not about just a job but a profession of doing one thing worthwhile and lengthy lasting. I had a wonderful career and was very blessed. I attribute a part of that to my years at CCNY and being on the fencing crew. It gave me the arrogance and the knowledge to always observe my intuition. It has served me nicely and i hope to inspire others to do the same. Becoming a member of a sports activities team is just the beginning of an extended journey – a journey full of joy and disappointments, of profitable and dropping by one contact, and of friendship that lasted a lifetime.
After retirement, I decided to return to fencing. I joined the Fencers Membership and have started working towards once more once per week. I met some of my old colleagues who’ve continued fencing all these years. Some are in their 70s and 80s. I read a book recently on aging and the writer described in the introduction of a woman who lived a file 122 years previous. At the ago of 85, she took up the sport of fencing… It is a type of sports that can literally final a lifetime.
A few of you freshmen and sophomores can nonetheless have that experience. Why not stop by the fencing staff follow on the gymnasium and test it out? You could be pleasantly stunned. It should change your life. It modified my life for the better.
