Pride and Prejudice is another favorite book of mine. It was first published in 1813 and was the very first Jane Austen book I ever read.
It was on my school list over forty years ago. I loved it then which was unusual because even though I was an avid reader at that age most of the books on our school list were terrible.
The Bennet Family
We meet Mr and Mrs Bennet and their five daughters in the first few paragraphs. They live in a small town near London in England in the 1800’s. Mrs Bennet like most mothers of the time is pre occupied with getting all her daughters married to suitable gentleman.
You can read the first four chapters of Pride and Prejudice free by clicking on the Amazon link to your right. You will immediately get involved with the family and love the wit of the father of the girls. Jane Bennet is the eldest daughter and is easily taken in by people because she believes everyone is good.
Elizabeth Bennet is the second eldest daughter and the one who is the strongest in character. We follow them as they do the rounds of society balls and house visits. Elizabeth would love to meet the right man and fall in love but is not prepared to marry any suitable man just for the sake of it.
This is a very moving and humorous look at life for single women in 19th century England. But at the same time the reader instantly becomes involved with the main characters and their family. What about the men in the book? There are excellent twists and surprises with all the male characters and they are as complex and interesting as the women.
I recommend Pride and Prejudice 100%.
Pride and Prejudice Buy Now Emma by Jane Austen
The main character is Emma Woodhouse who lives a very pampered and spoiled life in 19th century England. She lost her mother when she was very young. When her elder sister got married Emma was living with her father and was in charge of the household.
We meet her when she is twenty one years old and very confidant about her looks and abilities in society She spends her time match making for her friends and acquaintances. She believes she knows best and continues to interfere in the romantic lives of the people all around her.
There are many characters that the reader gets to know and really care about. It is actually a very witty book and we get carried away with the gentle life. There are also moments of sadness and misunderstanding where you will want to shout at the characters to wake up and realise what is happening.
Emma does not sound like a very likable person but you will be enthralled by her journey as she finally realises that she doesn’t know what is best for everyone and should be more careful what she does. And you will be delighted for her when she too finds love.
This was first published in December 1815. You can read the first seven chapters of Emma by Jane Austen free by clicking on the link to your right.
I have not read this book so can not give my personal view of it. But I know from reading other books by Jane Austen that the reader will instantly like the main character of seventeen year old Catherine Morland.
It is set in 1800’s England. Catherine is a young lady who reads many mystery Gothic books. She takes a trip with family friends to Bath. We see her become friends with other characters her own age.
She is invited to stay with some of these new friends at their estate in Northanger Abbey. Catherine is in awe when she stays at this very large estate. We follow her as she becomes involved in the daily life of the people and events there.
